The Dardanelles Bridge is also known as the Çanakkale Bridge, after the province whose two parts, on either side of the Dardanelles strait, it links. Its main span is 2,023 metres (6,637.1 feet) long – just 33 metres (105 feet) longer than the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, in Japan, which had previously held the record as the world's longest single–span suspension bridge since it opened in 1998.
